India’s Data Centre Opportunity: The Next Digital Infrastructure Race


Data is increasingly becoming the new infrastructure of the global economy. Just as roads, ports, railways and electricity networks powered the industrial age, data centres are becoming the backbone of the digital age.


According to the 2026 figures shared from Data Center Map, the United States dominates the global landscape with 4,287 data centres. The United Kingdom has 530, Germany 513, China 369, France 349, while India has 302.


India is growing—but the gap is significant


India's 302 data centres place it sixth among the countries listed. That is an encouraging position, but it also highlights how much further the country has to go.


The most striking comparison is with the United States. The US has more than 14 times India's reported number of data centres. Even the UK and Germany, with much smaller populations, have substantially more.


This matters because data centres are not simply warehouses filled with servers. They are critical infrastructure for:


Artificial intelligence and machine learning


Cloud computing


Digital payments and financial technology


E-commerce


5G and future telecommunications


Government digital services


Big-data analytics


Enterprise software


Internet and streaming services


Emerging technologies such as quantum computing



India has a unique advantage


India generates enormous quantities of digital data and has one of the world's largest internet-connected populations. It also has a rapidly expanding digital economy, a strong IT-services ecosystem and an increasingly important role in global technology.


But generating data and storing/processing data are two different things.


India needs sufficient domestic computing and storage capacity to ensure that its digital economy does not become excessively dependent on infrastructure located elsewhere.


The rise of AI makes this even more urgent.


Training and operating advanced AI systems requires enormous computing power. AI is therefore transforming data centres from conventional storage facilities into high-performance computing infrastructure.


The real challenge is electricity


Building data centres is not merely a question of constructing large buildings and installing servers.


They require:


Reliable electricity + high-speed connectivity + cooling + land + cybersecurity + skilled manpower + capital.


Among these, electricity could become one of India's biggest challenges.


Large AI-oriented data centres can consume enormous amounts of power. Therefore, India's data-centre strategy must be connected with its renewable-energy, nuclear-energy, transmission and electricity-storage strategies.


If India wants to become an AI and digital superpower, it needs not only more computers—but also more reliable and affordable electricity to run them.


From IT outsourcing to digital infrastructure


India became a global technology powerhouse largely through software, IT services and outsourcing.


The next phase should be different.


India should aim to become a major global hub for:


software + cloud + AI + semiconductors + data centres + digital infrastructure.


That would move India further up the technology value chain.


Instead of merely providing technological services to the world, India should increasingly own the infrastructure on which those services operate.


India needs a long-term data-centre strategy


India should consider creating a national framework focused on:


1. Massive expansion of data-centre capacity



2. Green and renewable-powered data centres



3. AI-focused high-performance computing facilities



4. Faster power and transmission infrastructure



5. Better fibre and international connectivity



6. Development of data-centre clusters beyond the largest metros



7. Strong cybersecurity and disaster-recovery systems



8. Domestic cloud and sovereign computing capabilities



9. Incentives for private investment



10. Greater integration between data centres, semiconductor manufacturing and AI development




The geographical distribution also matters. Concentrating everything in a few cities could create serious risks from power constraints, natural disasters, network failures and other disruptions.


India should develop multiple resilient digital-infrastructure hubs across the country.


The bigger picture


The number 302 should therefore not be viewed simply as a ranking.


It should be viewed as a strategic signal.


India has already demonstrated that it can build enormous digital platforms—from digital payments to Aadhaar-scale systems and nationwide digital public infrastructure. The next question is whether India can build enough of the physical computing infrastructure required to support the next generation of the digital economy.


The global competition is moving from:


Who has the most data?


to


Who can store, process and intelligently use the most data?


And increasingly:


Who has the computing power to run the AI revolution?


India has the talent, market and digital demand.


Now it needs to build the infrastructure.


India should not merely be the world's back office. It should aspire to become one of the world's major digital infrastructure hubs.
